FUN BUNCH ROSTER 2011
Patti "gazoo" Anderson
rover
Ageless Patti Anderson is a stalwart and one of the longest serving members of the fun bunch. Known for her prowess on the marathoning circuit, patti puts her speed to good use on the ball diamond, effortlessly gliding around the bases. A little timid in the outfield Patti has been known to snag the odd flyball much to the delight of her teammates. Having had a few close calls with plays at first base, Patti now sports her "gazoo" like batting helmet earning her her affectionate nickname.
Dom "the dominator" Angelo
rover, 3rd base
Relative newcomer Dom Angelo is an enthusiastic young speedster who can fly down the line and beat out seemingly impossible infield hits. She continues to develop her batting skills and is learning to place the ball and hit for power making her a triple threat when she comes to bat.
Chantal "bud light lime" Bujold
1st base
Chantal anchors the infield with her rock-solid play at first base. Even with her troublesome back, Chantal never backs down from a play regardless of how hard the ball is thrown (all though she prefers the ball comes in above her knees). Equally impressive is her skill as a power-hitter. She has the ability to crush pitches to deep outfield for extra-base hits on a regular basis.
Richard "wild thing" Bujold
outfield, 2nd base
His nickname speaks for itself. Does everything with wild abandon. Seemingly risks life and limb on every play. Wears his heart on his sleeve. Would run through a brick wall to make a play. The "john tonelli" of baseball. Works hard and plays harder. Every manager would love a team full of "wild things". A great guy to have on your team.
Paolo "slip-n-slide" Daros
outfield, 2nd base
Paolo is learning the hard way that playing without cleats is no laughing matter. Having taken his share of spills in the outfield playing in tennis shoes, Paolo is begrudingly beginning to admit that cleats are the way to go. His teammates are hoping that Santa Claus placed a nike shoe-box under the christmas tree this year. Paolo is a big-time hitter who can launch the ball with the best of them.
Tea "the terminator" Derakhshan
rover, 2nd base
Aptly named "the terminator" for the way she plays the game. Tea is fast, strong, intense and competitive. Sort of like a much younger, female version of Steve. Tea is a student of the game, diligent in her attention to detail and willingness to learn the nuances of both offensive and defensive play. She runs like the wind, places hits with surgical precision, and fields balls without regards to her personal safety. Loves playing 2nd base.
John "hans solo" Devries
left field
The senior member of the team, John plays with the ability and fitness level of a youngster. Recruited from the "mixed nuts" fastball team, John earns his spot on the roster with a deceptively hard throwing arm and his consistent play in the outfield. John is a solid singles hitter who has been known to go deep on occasion but sometimes with the bases empty earning him the "hans solo" moniker.
Martin "the gazelle" Desjardins
centre field
Dubbed "the gazelle" for his effortless speed in the outfield, Martin brings much-needed youth to the male contingent of the fun bunch. A perennial all-star player who practically covers the outfield by himself, Martin is blazingly fast running the bases and has a near-perfect batting average. Martin has the enviable combination of youth, speed, power, and ability.
Alison "bulldozer" Hale
rover, catcher, 1st base
Long-serving team captain, Alison has been rejuvenated as of late with her newly acquired power-hitting skills. Crunching some of the furthest hits of the Fun Bunch women, Alison also serves as a respectable rover and back-up 1st baseman. Known for her determination running the bases, more than one player has learned the hard way how she earned her nickname when they foolishly crossed her path.
Jen "sunny jen" Irving
rover, 3rd base
With her sunny disposition, Jen has been a great addition to the Fun Bunch. Known for her "off-line" approach to email correspondence, Jen continues to work on her timing at the plate which has been improving with practice. When she makes solid contact, her hits have been known to travel a long way. Jen is fearless on the field and often puts her personal safety at risk to keep a ball in the infield while playing the hot corner.
Glen "the wrangler" Rankin
outfield, 2nd base, shortstop
Glen joined the Fun Bunch a few years ago as a free-agent when his professional hockey career came to an end. Torn rotator cuffs make playing the outfield painful, but you will never hear "the wrangler" complain. Making some of the most remarkable catches of the season last year, Glen can hit the ball deep as well. His experience playing professional sports has left Glen with little patience for players taking the game too seriously and he has been known on occasion to "straighten them out".
Rowena "throw it home" Sams
catcher
Rowena is the longest-serving active member of the Fun Bunch. With "Dorian Gray" like composition, Rowena seems to have stood still in time, while the rest of the Fun Bunch age rather ungracefully. Known for her ability to risk life-and-limb to make a play at home plate, Rowena has also perfected the legal infield bunt to jump-start the team when needed.
Scott "boom-boom" Saunders
centre field
Scott has shed his "bum rap" for missing the playoffs the last few years with a stellar performance this post-season. Known for his explosive bat, Scott also has the strongest arm on the team, gunning down players from straight away centre on occasion. The younger of the Saunders "bash brothers", Scott has learned a lot from his big brother Steve who continues to mentor him on and off the field.
Steve "downtown" Saunders
shortstop
"they broke the mold when they made this guy" his teammates have been quoted saying in reverence of Steve "downtown" Saunders. Entering his 25th year as Fun Bunch shortstop, Steve is an "old school" player who has a "take no prisoners" approach to the game. Back surgery, a broken nose, torn achilles tendon, an arthritic hip and shoulders and a permanently sprained right hand have not been able to slow Steve down. The older of the Saunders "bash brothers" Steve holds the all-time Fun Bunch record for home runs, hits, batting average, on-base percentage and slugging percentage. With retirement no where on the horizon Steve looks forward to his next 25 years with the Fun Bunch.
