FUN BUNCH REMAIN UNBEATEN
OTTAWA — The Fun Bunch managed to maintain their perfect record by beating “stop hitting on us” 19-5 despite swarming bees and a rare plague of June bugs in the outfield. Right fielder Scott Saunders said that a bee “flew right in my ear and out the other side” while he was making a stellar catch to end a rally. “I must have stepped on a hornet’s nest as the bees were swarming everywhere”, said Saunders triumphantly. Equally bizarre was the plague of June bugs that descended on the outfield and engulfed outfielder Paolo Daros causing him to juggle and ultimately drop a routine fly ball. “All of a sudden there was a cloud of June bugs everywhere – I couldn’t see the ball through haze”, Daros remarked. Center fielder John Devries (the oldest player on the team) said he was “a bit surprised” by Paolo’s claim as he was standing next to him in the outfield yet did not encounter any June bugs at all. “In my day – we had real plagues of locusts”, Devries recalled nostalgically.
