Wed May 30 vs. Bons Vivants

FUN BUNCH BEAT BONS VIVANTS IN TIDY GEM

Team now in mid-season form

OTTAWA-With their fourth win in a row, the Fun Bunch have entered mid-season in championship form. Beating the Bons Vivants 22-7 they scored at least one run in each inning and had two five run innings while limiting their opponents to a maximum of two runs per inning and shutting them out in four of the last five innings. Playing at the vast Morrison ball park, and oddly choosing to utilize only three outfielders, the fun bunch gave the Bons Vivants plenty of real estate to drop bloopers into--allowing them to chalk up their seven runs. In a case of "too-little-too-late", unpredictable outfielder Richard "wild thing" Bujold decided to "take charge" and swap himself from right field to rover citing a dearth of hits over first base. Looking timidly to Steve "field marshall" Saunders for approval that was not forthcoming, he nonetheless stood his ground--boldly defiant. What happened next gave new meaning to the term "worst case scenario" . Seeing the absurd exchange occur, the Bons Vivants could scarcely contain their glee as they immediately zeroed in on the fun bunch neophyte right fielder --in this case Dom "the dominator" Angelo playing in only her first game of the season --and decided to make the fun bunch pay for such a glaring defensive error. The next batter promptly hit a stratospheric fly ball targeted directly at "the dominator" who--despite her apprehension at playing the difficult position--made a valiant attempt to catch the ball and earned herself a fat lip for her effort as the ball careened off her glove and into her face. Verifying that all her teeth remained in place, she cast a hateful glance in the direction of "wild thing" as her teammates helped her off the field, ushering him once more back into the all-too-familiar doghouse. Down three players heading into the game, the fun bunch bolstered their ranks with newcomer Clark "thirsty hound" Lawlor. Lawlor, who is the husband of new fun bunch acquisition Kathie "I'll catch anything" Adare, was brought out with low expectations-- given that he hasn't played softball since he was ten--but put up a respectable performance crunching a home run in his first at bat and finishing the night with two runs scored and five hits, earning himself a spot on the radar screen. Newcomer Jamie "MVP" Anderson, was also invited back for a second look after her outstanding inaugural audition and once again did not disappoint with solid batting and a great defensive play at third where she dug a grounder out of the dirt and deftly mowed down the runner rapidly advancing to second. Team captain Alison "bulldozer" Hale continued her streak of clutch plate appearances when she steadfastly refused to be the third out time and time again by placing efficient hits ever-so-slightly over the infielders heads. Steve "downtown" Saunders also contributed a home run with a monster blast into the back yard of an unsuspecting ball diamond neighbor despite a fierce inbound gale, giving him one of his five hits of the night. But this was a team effort, with solid hitting and fielding and base running contributed by everyone including a couple of double plays turned by newly minted second baseman Glen "the wrangler" Rankin. With the score safely out of reach, "wild thing" Bujold decided he was not quite finished for the night. When the next Bons Vivants batter hit a blooper solidly into rover territory everyone assumed the game was over. But unfortunately nothing is ever that simple when "wild thing" is involved, as he seemingly "fell asleep at the switch" as the ball was rapidly descending about ten feet from where he stood transfixed. Sensing--with shock and horror--that "wild thing" was not going to even attempt to make the play, Martin "the gazelle" Desjardins accelerated at a breath taking pace and lunged--glove outstretched--to try and cover for his immobile teammate. Alas, even "the gazelle's" valiant attempt was unable to prevent the bons vivants batter from reaching base. With a droop of his head ,a shrug of his shoulders and nary a word, team co-captain Steve "downtown" Saunders pensively wondered just which team "wild thing" was playing for. However, after the unwelcome comic relief, the team closed ranks and shut down the side, to finish the game and chalk up another solid win.
