RAINED OUT

Fun Bunch set new low in team attendance as weather wreaks havoc with ball game

OTTAWA-With only two guys in the outfield and seven players total, the Fun Bunch were more than holding their own against the rebranded Booze Houndz-cum-Impact ball team. Mysteriously missing Scott, Glen, Martin, Paolo, Tea, Dom and Chantal, things started off fortuitously for the intrepid Fun Bunch when Impact failed to get a ball out of the infield for the first two innings. The Fun Bunch meanwhile managed to grind out three runs on a couple of singles and a two run shot by Hans Solo Devries--continuing his torrid start to the season--and very nearly added three more as Steve "downtown" Saunders hit a towering fly ball to the warning track. Devries also made the catch of the game when he "climbed the ladder" at the fence to snag a sure home run ball hit by the biggest (and meanest) Booze Hound--keeping them off the score sheet. Both teams were soon forced off the field however as the capricious weather spawned a deluge, huddling everyone under their umbrellas. Quick thinking Devries kept the bats dry when he covered them with Saunders' rainproof jacket forcing him to shiver through the rain delay in only his t-shirt. "This game is not ending early on my watch", shouted "downtown" over the howling wind and driving rain to his scanty crew who quietly listened on tenterhooks. Instructing the team to keep playing and pick up the slack should any members get hit by lightning, he marched them back onto the field over their anguished protests. With no option but to follow suit, the shocked Booze Houndz returned to the field as well. The Fun Bunch--rejuvenated after their brief respite and rousing oration--proceeded to pound out five runs in the inning including a two run shot by Saunders and a three run shot by Devries. As if finally realizing the Fun Bunch had only a meagre defense, the Booze Houndz responded by grinding out five runs with a combination of bloopers and opposite field hits leaving the Fun Bunch running widdershins in the outfield. With the Fun Bunch leading 8-5 heading into the bottom of the fourth inning, a fork of lightening landed at precisely the same time as the thunderclap sounded, leaving little doubt of imminent danger, and the game was called leaving Steve "field marshall" Saunders violently protesting from the infield, alone in the pelting rain.
